Sava

The Sava River is a winding waterway that cuts through South-Eastern Europe and forms part of the international border between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia. It originates in the Carpathian Mountains of Slovenia, flows through Croatia and Serbia, and empties into the Danube River near Belgrade before finally reaching the Black Sea.
This major river is of great importance to the people of Croatia, providing a vital source of water for drinking, irrigation, fishing, and various industrial and agricultural activities. It is also a place of stunning beauty, with its rocky outcrops, quaint villages, and the majestic Biokovo Mountains. The Sava River is home to a variety of ecosystems, making it a popular destination for recreational activities such as rafting, canoeing, and sailing.
Despite its many benefits, the Sava River has faced several challenges in recent years, including over-fishing and pollution. To address these issues, several initiatives have been launched, including the "Saving Sava" program, which works to reduce agricultural nutrient inputs and water pollution, and the "River Watch" program, which monitors water quality and the presence of invasive species to restore the river's natural habitats and native species.
The Sava River holds a special place in Croatian folklore and culture, inspiring many poems, books, and songs. It is a source of great economic and recreational value, and the efforts to protect and preserve it demonstrate Croatia's commitment to maintaining the environmental wealth of the river for future generations to enjoy.
