Una

Located in northwestern Croatia, the beautiful river Una is one of the most stunning in Europe. Rising in the Učka mountain, it flows through Gorski Kotar, forming a natural border between Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Along its stretch between these two countries, known as the Unac, the river boasts an abundance of rapids and falls, making it a popular destination for white water rafting and kayaking.
With a total length of 212.6 kilometers, the Una is a typical lowland river, with few high and steep banks. Its waters are usually crystal clear, with a few areas of darker water due to peaty substances. The river is home to a fairly healthy fish population, including bass, chub, and huchen in its deeper parts.
The Una is home to a total of 69 rapids and waterfalls, with the main section running from Martin Brod to the village of Bosanska Bojna in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The most well-known rapids include the Martin Brod Rapids and the Strbacki Buk. The former, which is 1.5 kilometers long, consists of several class II-IV rapids, offering thrilling white water rafting and kayaking experiences. The latter, one of the largest and most powerful rapids on the Una, features a vertical drop of over 30 meters.

The Scenery

The scenery surrounding the Una is breathtaking, with lush forests and limestone cliffs. Hiking trails of varying difficulty follow the river, leading to stunning waterfalls such as Krupa, located near the village of Krupa on the Una. The area is also known for its spas and thermal springs, attracting visitors from near and far.
The Una and its surrounding area are protected as a national monument and form part of the Una National Park, established in 2008. This park is a vital habitat for many plant and animal species, many of which are protected. Within the park, there is an ethnological open-air museum where visitors can learn about the cultural heritage of the people who live around the Una. Not only is the Una a beautiful river that captivates visitors with its stunning views, but it also symbolizes hope, resilience, and friendship between Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. It serves as an important habitat for rare species and a reminder of nature's beauty and magnificence.
