Ston

Ston is a beautifully located town in Croatia, situated on the Pelješac peninsula. It is home to many historic landmarks, including its impressive walls and fortifications, as well as churches and salt flats. The town is surrounded by picturesque vineyards and mountains, making it an attractive destination for visitors.
In addition to its natural beauty, Ston has a rich history dating back to its founding by the Roman Empire in the 4th century. Its strategic location made it an important hub for trade and a key center of Roman control in the Adriatic region. During this time, it was home to a Roman governor's representative and featured a Roman-style palace.

The Walls of Ston

Ston's walls, which are the longest in Europe at five kilometers in length and featuring 20 bastions, were constructed in the 14th century. These walls played a crucial role in the defense of the Republic of Ragusa against the Ottoman Empire. After Ragusa's fall, Ston was taken over by the Venetians, who used it as a base to defend the peninsula against frequent pirate attacks.

Exploring Ston

Today, Ston is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural gems. Visitors can still enjoy breathtaking views from the walls and explore the town's museum, churches, and old buildings. The 16th century church of Saints Peter and Paul, located next to the town hall, is a must-see. Another popular attraction is the salt works, which have been in operation since the early 1200s. The salt works consist of a 200-kilometer network of pans, fields, and channels, all of which can be explored by visitors.
Located near the popular beach resort of Makarska, Ston is a great destination for a day trip or longer stay. It is a truly remarkable place in Croatia that is always worth a visit.
