Neretva​

Nestled in the southeast of Croatia, the Neretva Delta boasts breathtaking landscapes and lagoons that make it a picturesque destination for relaxation and adventure. This region, alongside the stunning Neretva River, is known for its diverse ecosystem and important role in supporting Croatia's biodiversity. In fact, the Neretva Delta is home to a variety of habitats and wildlife, including the European Spoonbill, Dalmatian Pelican, Greater Flamingo, Slender-billed Gull, Emperor Goose, and White-headed Duck. Eco-tourists also flock to the area to experience its diverse flora and fauna, as well as the numerous walking and boating opportunities it offers.

A Diverse Ecosystem

Comprised of a riverside wetland and meadows covering 40km, the Neretva Delta is separated by several channels and springs. Within its 2,500 hectares, there are 650 types of salt-tolerant vegetation that provide food and grazing for waterfowl, wading birds, and amphibians. The Neretva River serves as the primary transport corridor for agriculture and tourism in the region, transporting over 51 million tonnes of cargo each year. Additionally, the delta is thought to be a major source of employment, with opportunities in fishing, truck farming, and construction available to fishermen and their families.

Protecting the Neretva Delta

The Croatian government recognizes the importance of the Neretva Delta and has taken steps to protect it as a habitat for protected species and a tourist destination. The Neretva Delta Nature Park has been established and is the first protected coastal wetland in Croatia.
