Klis

Klis is a small historical town located in the Split-Dalmatia county in Croatia. With a population of around 1,500 people, Klis is situated in a narrow canyon just north of the city of Split and is surrounded by steep slopes and stunning greenery. The town has been inhabited since Roman times, with a settlement first mentioned in 3rd-century documents. However, Klis is most famous as the site of the 9th-century Klis Fortress, an important strategic defense point against the invading Ottomans. The fort has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries and is now a must-see attraction when visiting Klis. With its gated entry, turrets, drawbridge, and sprawling fortifications, it's easy to see why the Klis Fortress is a popular destination for travelers (also it is a prime location in the Game of Thrones series).
As for the town itself, it has a charming atmosphere and bustling streets. The narrow Medieval streets are home to many artisan shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a great place to explore on foot and find a true Croatian culinary experience. Be sure to try out some of the local delicacies such as the Klis sjomlija, a traditional dish that consists of potatoes and bacon and is served with cheese and cream.
In addition to its rich history and cultural attractions, Klis is also known for its stunning natural scenery. The canyon-like slopes and breathtaking landscapes provide a great backdrop to the town, and there are numerous hiking trails that can be followed to discover beautiful viewpoints. The nearby mountains and hills also create a great area for wildlife viewing, including deer, fox, and bear.
