Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again is a must-watch Hollywood summer movie for everyone, even if you’re not a fan of musicals. It’s the perfect escape to the picturesque Greek island of Kalokairi. Fans of the first movie will remember that the plot takes place on the island, as Donna invites her friends to her daughter Sophie’s wedding.

Ten years later, the gang reunites on the island for the grand opening of a hotel in Donna’s memory. However, what many don’t know is that the second movie wasn’t actually filmed on Kalokairi, or even in Greece. Instead, the remote island of Vis in Croatia was the filming location. So, if you’re a Mamma Mia fan or just visiting Vis, here are the main filming locations you can explore around the island.

The ferry harbor

Remember those scenes in the movie when almost all of the people who wanted to go to the island missed the ferry after talking to the border control guy? Well, those scenes were shot in the harbor of the city of Vis.

The beach scenes

The beach scenes, including when people first arrived at the island and when young Donna set foot on it, were all filmed at the Barjoška bay. This bay was the main spot for shooting the movie, and even new paths and roads were constructed for the production.

The Greek market

The vibrant Greek market, which appears frequently in the movie, was also located in the city of Vis. Donna shopping for a new outfit, Sam trying to find Donna, and many other scenes were shot here. The door of Pizzeria Dionysus and the surrounding stairs that lead to the market were the main location.

Fun fact: The film crew imported all of the fruits and dishes sold at the market from Greece to ensure authenticity.

The 300 people Abba performance

The stunning performance of the iconic Abba song was filmed in Barjaci, located north of Barjoška Bay. This area was once used as an artillery battery when the island of Vis served as a military station for Tito.

The church where local fisherman Alexio gets his bride

Young Donna and Bill help local fisherman Alexio reach the St. Jerronim church in Prirovo, a small town near Vis, where his beloved is set to be married. Fortunately, Alexio and his bride manage to escape.

The Greek taverna

Harry and Bill then dine at the Greek Taverna, which is actually the popular restaurant Jastožera in Komiza on the island of Vis. The restaurant offers a breathtaking view of a nearby beach. If you’re lucky, you can even get the same table with the same view. Alternatively, you can dine at the Konoba Baku, a restaurant just next to Jastožera, and enjoy the view from the outside.

Young Donna and Sam’s boat ride

Sam fondly remembers his first boat tour with Donna, taking in the stunning landscape of Stiniva Bay, the best beach in Europe in 2016. The hilly road leading to the beach makes it difficult to reach by foot, so most visitors arrive by boat to experience its beauty.
