Mljet

Located on the Adriatic Sea, the island of Mljet is a picturesque destination located off the southern coast of Croatia. Mljet is just 14.5 kilometers long and less than 8 kilometers wide, giving it a coastline of over 43 kilometers. Visitors to Mljet can enjoy its tranquil beauty, laid-back atmosphere, and stunning natural beauty, including its two saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero, which are connected by a narrow canal. These lakes, which are said to be the only two saltwater lakes in Europe, are located within the boundaries of the stunning Mljet National Park.
In addition to the lakes, Mljet is home to a number of small villages. The largest settlement is Polace, which has a population of around 1,000 people year-round and serves as the main port for the island. The smaller communities of Korita and Prozid are scattered throughout the island and offer a laid-back vibe and winding streets to explore.
Nature lovers will appreciate the abundance of flora and fauna found on Mljet, including the highest number of species of birds in the country and rare cormorants, warblers, and pelicans. The island's national park is also home to interesting plant life and wildlife, such as eel-grass, red coral, seagrasses, and otters.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy on the island, including trips to the national park's numerous beaches and sailing excursions to neighboring islands and islets. For a more low-key vacation, Mljet is home to delightful taverns and restaurants, and its marina is a great spot for a walk, jog, or bike ride. Overall, Mljet is an idyllic destination for an active holiday, romantic escape, or a relaxing getaway. It's no wonder that this tiny island is one of Croatia's biggest tourist havens.
