Šolta

When planning a trip to Croatia, many tourists head to the well-known islands of Hvar and Korcula. However, there are still some lesser-known destinations worth considering, such as the beautiful and serene island of Šolta. Located just an hour away by boat from Split and the central Dalmatian islands, Šolta is a small island with an area of 43 square kilometres and a population of around 2,600 people.
Šolta is gaining more attention from tourists every year due to its unspoilt nature and peaceful atmosphere. In addition to its picturesque landscape, the island is dotted with charming fishing villages, including the largest, Grohote, which features stone houses, churches, and olive groves. There are also seven other villages on the island, each with its own distinct character and old-fashioned charm.
One of the things that makes Šolta special is its quiet, rural setting. The island is dominated by sweeping hills and fields of olive groves, vineyards, and orchards, making it a perfect getaway for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life. While there are some beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters on the island, visitors can also experience the local culture by visiting one of the traditional taverns in the villages and savouring home-cooked Dalmatian cuisine, such as local seafood or dishes like 'pašticada', often accompanied by Croatian wine or 'rakija'.
Šolta is also a great destination for hiking and cycling, with a few themed trails to choose from. One popular route is the Grohote – Rogac trail, which takes walkers on a 7-mile journey through the island's beautiful countryside to the village of Rogac.
Overall, Šolta is a unique and idyllic destination that offers a peaceful escape from the stresses of everyday life. Whether you're enjoying the simple pleasures of a traditional Taverna or exploring the island's stunning rural landscape, this is a place where you can truly experience the authentic Mediterranean way of life.
