The must watch Hollywood summer movie in 2018 was definitely Mamma Mia 2 – Here we go again. Even if you are not a musical fan, watching Mamma Mia 2 is for all of us who want a quick escape to the seaside.
Everybody who watched the first part knows: the plot takes place at the small and beautiful Greek island Kalokairi. Donna, the main character lives on the island, inviting all her friends for her daughters Sophie’s wedding.
In The second movie, 10 years have passed and everybody meets again at the island for a big hotel opening in Donna’s memory. But little do most people know: the second movie wasn’t shot at the Greek island Kalokairi. Not even in Greece.
The filming location was the beautiful and remote island of Vis in Croatia. So if you are a Mamma Mia fan or just visiting Vis, here are the main filming locations that you can discover around the island:

1) The ferry harbor.
You remember the scenes when almost all of the persons that want to go to the island miss the ferry after talking to the border control guy?
Well, those scenes where shot in the harbor of the city of Vis.

2) The beach scenes.
Most beach scenes (the ones when people start arriving at the island as well as the ones when young Donna sets foot on it) are shot at the Barjoška bay. In fact, this bay was the main spot for shooting the movie. Even new paths and roads were build for the production of the movie.

3) The Greek market.
The colorful Greek market appears quite often in the movie. Donna shopping a new outfit, Sam trying to find Donna, and many more scenes are shot here. In reality, this ‘Greek’ market is located in the city of Vis. The door of Pizzeria Dionysus and the surrounding stairs that lead to the market being the main location.
Interesting fact: The film crew imported all fruits and dishes sold at the market from Greece to guarantee authenticity.

4) The 300 people Abba performance.
The enormous performance of the famous Abba song has been filmed in Barjaci – north of Barjoška bay. This area has been used as an artillery battery back in the times when the island Vis served as a military station for Tito.

5) The church where local fisherman Alexio gets his bride.
Young Donna and Bill are helping local fisherman Alexio to reach the church where the love of his life is supposed to get married. Alexio and his bride manage to escape. The St. Jerronim church in the background is located in Prirovo, a small town just next to the city of Vis.

6) The Greek taverna.
Harry and Bill are dining in a Greek Taverna where they meet the fisherman Alexio. The Taverna looks very appealing due to an amazing view of a little beach. This restaurant luckily exists in realty. However, it is not a Greek Taverna. It is a restaurant in the town of Komiza on the island Vis with the name Jastožera. The place is very popular and well known among yachters. If you are lucky enough you can try to get the exact same table with the view. Alternatively, you can dine in the Konoba Baku, a restaurant just next to Jastožera and have a great view from the outside.

7) Young Donna and Sam’s boat ride.
Sam is remembering his first boat tour with Donna. The stunning landscape in the background belongs to the best beach in Europe in 2016, Stiniva bay. You get the best views of this beach from the hilly road – which makes is hard to reach by foot. Therefore, most visitors arrive by boat to experience Stiniva.

8) The moonlit stroll of young Donna and Sam.
The beach Srebrna Bay and its’ views of the island and sea served as the perfect romantic filming spot for young Donna and Sam strolling around the island in the moonlight.

9) The island in general.
Donna’s island exploration shows how colorful, hilly and beautiful Vis is – a true hidden gem in the Adriatic.
